Torso was my first carving of the human form. The stone is a
lovely golden alabaster from Utah with plenty of brown, a hint of red,
and some fine translucent veins.
All in all, I am very happy with the work. What became of it, though, is even nicer than the piece itself. I was showing my work at a show in Santa Clara somewhere and had this piece there, unfinished and so not yet for sale. A woman wound up spending a lot of time looking at the stone, and we struck up a conversation. It turns out she'd been looking for a stone torso for a long time and been unable to find one. She asked a lot of good questions, and then told me she was getting engaged and was thinking she wanted a stone torso sculpture instead of an engagement ring. Would I mind if she brought her soon-to-be fiance back in the afternoon to look at the piece? Of course I wouldn't mind. To make a long story short, they came back, and asked me to finish the piece for them. I delivered it shortly before their wedding, and I hope it brings them both much happiness. Just knowing she wanted it so much still makes me smile. That kind of feedback is hard to beat. Dimensions: Approximately 12 inches wide, 8 inches thick, and 20 inches tall. The overall height is about 24 inches including the base. Sold. | |||||||
