One year during the annual art show put on by the
Mountain Art Guild
I had a block of translucent, white Italian alabaster out. I often bring
some raw stones with me so people can see the starting and ending points
in my work. A young girl walked up and pointed at this stone and asked
me what it was going to be. At the time, I had no clue, so I asked what
she thought it was. Her answer was quick - a polar bear.
It did, indeed, become that polar bear. I call this work Morning Light because she (yes, the bear is a she to me) is looking out at the dawn horizon, perhaps just waking. If this carving is lit from underneath, entire stone glows. The bottom is actually polished to make that possible too. A lit base is being built for Morning Light by my friend Amy Sams. When that is done - hopefully in late 2006 - this page will be updated. Approximate dimensions are 18 inches from nose to tail, 9 inches tall, and 8 inches wide. This is quite a bit of stone - perhaps 50 pounds or more - so it has to be displayed on something suitably strong. Morning Light is available for purchase. Please contact the artist for more information. |
