A set of gray and tan whale flukes seen just before they slip beneath the surface. This piece came about because it was exactly what was in the stone - the shape and color of the stone clearly told me what needed to happen. It took me a while to figure that out, though. I finally tweaked to the nature of the piece while showing the raw stone to someone at the annual Mountain Art Guild show in June of 2003. I'd had the stone for three years before that, I think, and hadn't figured out what it was. But when I flipped it over to show the cut side, an image of the final piece popped into my head, and the rest followed.

See the carving page for a series of pictures starting from the raw stone and leading to the finished piece, with comments on the process.

Carved in gray Italian alabaster. Dimensions: 24" wide, 9" tall, 7" deep.

Sold.
