Croy Fire Pictures -- Sept 2002
I took these pictures of the Croy fire from Summit Road, looking
basically east on Sept 25, 2002. This was the
day before this part of Summit Road was closed to everyone but
residents and emergency equipment. These pictures were taken about
noon, I think. I wasn't taking notes, so that's plus or minus an
hour or more.
The fire at this point is about 8 miles from my house, and
the winds are calm, as you can see from the smoke.

This picture shows two helicopters -- a spotter near the top of
the frame, just left of the smoke column -- and a water carrier
lower down. Look for the bucket beneath the carrier. It
is just visible. You can also see a flare up at the edge of the
fire. |
 |
This picture shows a single helicopter. I think his water
bucket is lost in the background of the hills.
You can see another flare up too. |
 |
One helicopter -- just at the hill top. The fire is a tiny bit
brighter here -- in two places. |

This picture shows the maximum field of view with my camera.
The column of smoke was about 1 mile high at
this time (according to a local radio station.) |
 |
A map of the fire relative to my house. I took
two Mapquest maps, stuffed them together, and added the rough
outline of the fire on 9/28. The left star is the approximate
location of my home. The right star is about where the CDF says
the fire started. The middle star is about where the pictures were
taken from. This is only approximate, but it gives you the basic idea. |
All photos were taken with a Nikon 950 digital camera. The first 3 were
taken at maximum telephoto setting. The panorama at maximum wide angle.
For more info on the fire, see the
CDF Croy Fire Incident Page.
