Dog Stuff

I like dogs -- particularly Akitas, but any dog is a friend of mine.

Many people have claimed I was a dog in a previous life. Until recently, that was the only animal I'd ever been fingered as. Lately, however, my wife thinks I might have been a polar bear instead. (Hey, I like it cold!)

In any event, back to dogs. We've had four: Tsuki, Tachi, Nikki and Leah. Tsuki and Tachi were truly wonderful companions for the brief time we had them. Their stories will appear here at some point. I tried to write them once, but I didn't get very far. The memories are bittersweet and it hurt a lot. I will get there, but in the mean time you can read my wife's versions:

Nikki is here now -- a rescue from the hard cold world. Nikki is a shepherd crossed with something else -- something that gave her a very wide stance in the back end. She almost looks bow-legged. By our standards, she's not a big dog -- about 55 pounds. But she's fun to have around, and clearly appreciates her new home. That's good, because she's afraid of almost everything else that exists, anywhere. We have no idea what happened to Nikki in her past life, but she's been slow to recover from the mental scars.

Leah is here now too -- a rescue from the Santa Cruz SPCA. Leah is some sort of cattle dog, but the breed remains a mystery. She's a tiny bit smaller than Nikki, but makes up for it in energy that just won't quit. She's just as outgoing as Nikki is terrified, and needs a bucket to keep her personality in, as it's too large for her body.

Anne's got pages setup for these two as well:

Pictures will appear -- sooner or later.

And while I'm at it, here are a few Akita and dog related links that I've enjoyed:
